What to (actually) do with the inspiration you find

If you are anything like me, your Instagram is full of saved collections and your Pinterest has boards within boards of looks, products and quotes. But maybe you don't revisit those images often or you just don't know how to make the most out of your inspirations. Let's face it, just starring at the photos and daydreaming is not enough.

Let's specifically get into aesthetics and looks, be it outfits or makeup. You're ready to revamp your look but when it comes down to it, you gravitate back to your old habits and stay within your regular routine. Which is fine, if you don't want to elevate your every day or try something new...

I am going to use a personal example to show you how I take inspiration and implement it into my life.

Low Buns

Low buns are a whole mood right now for me. Not only is it a simple hairstyle to recreate, but they also look super chic AND you don't need any heat to recreate the look. (Healthy hair 2020 here I come!) So yes, I am having a low bun moment right now.

I went to Pinterest and Instagram and saved every low bun style that I wanted to recreate in my life. But you need to go beyond that.

I made a digital mood board (if you don't know how, read this) of my favourite looks for easy access for days when I am in a rush or don't know what to add to the look. That's right, it goes beyond just the hairstyle.

For example, I have been seeing low buns + gold hoops everywhere. Then I make a mental note: do I have gold hoops? If yes, take them out of my jewellery collection. If no, add to my must-buy list. (There are numerous styles of gold hoops to keep in mind.)

Next, this style requires a smooth finish. Do I have finishing spray? Or a smoothing serum? Yes, it's this one. (Bought it at Marshalls/TJMaxx)

Do I have the right hair accessories for this? Not only including bobby pins but maybe a clear elastic since my hair is blonde? Or for more casual days, a silk scrunchy?

The outfit is important too. What mood do I want to recreate when wearing this hair style? Badass in leather jacket? Chic business woman in blazer? Or hopeless romantic in turtleneck? What items do I need to pull out of my closet to recreate the mood? What do I want to add to my wishlist?

So you see, it's so much more than just a low bun. It's a whole ass vibe. Dig deeper. If your inspiration is a person, then do the work and do your research. What specifically do you like about that person? What is their style? How do they behave in interviews or videos? Where do they shop? What do they do on their time off? How are you going to implement those characteristics into your everyday life? Have a folder of videos of that person you love, clothing links that remind you of their style, whatever.
